“The first ever printed book (or more exactly, the first ever printed book that is actually dated) was the Chinese translation of an Indian Sanskrit treatise (Vajracchedikaprajnaparamita), the so called ‘Diamond sutra’. This was translated into Chinese by Kumarajiva (a half-Indian, half Tirkish Buddhist)in 402 CE and this manuscript was printed in 868. The introductory note that went with the volume explicitly explained that it was made for ‘Universal Free Distribution”.
